5.0 Satisfied bucket list

Anne_P, June 2026

High value excursion. Friendly crew. Knowledgeable bilingual (English/Spanish) guide. Clean and comfortable boat. Good food and plentiful refreshments. Actually being in the locks - with a big tanker - watching as we rose up - was an experience of a lifetime. A bucket list item.

5.0 Fascinating tour & great guide

Colleen_C, May 2026

The tour was very interesting and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. People asked questions and he was very good and patient about answering everyone's questions. I would definitely recommend this tour.

4.0 Panama Canal partial transfer

33donp, May 2026

We really enjoyed this - going through the locks was quite an experience. Very nice staff on board, good food. Nice narration of the process. But - - Our driver picked us up right on time (actually a few minutes early). Very nice gentleman. When we went to the next stop for a pick up (the Raddison Hotel) the group was not ready. We waited 20 minutes for the 3 person group to come down. That was unacceptable (not the driver’s fault), we then drove to a stop (not sure where) waited a few minutes and then continued on to the boat. We have no understanding of what that stop was for. We arrived at the boat well after 6:30 and were the last to board. It was not a great way to start this experience.

5.0 boutique hotel in casco viejo panama.

R7651EDlukeb, April 2026

my family stayed at hotel plaza herrera. it was an outstanding hotel. great restaurant and service. best i have had. the food and drinks were unique.

5.0 My View.

Irene_D, April 2026

Excellent trip. Collected on time at our hotel and taken to meeting place. Rather chaotic when trying to speak to the organiser as it was shambolic with others pushing and shoving to get her attention. Once on board it was a marvellous trip and the guide provided an excellent narrative.

1.0 Dissatisfied

BEVINGTONSHINOBU, March 2026

We do not recommend this tour. I chose this specific one because it was the only option that included hotel pickup. When I entered our hotel details during booking, it was accepted. However, after we were charged on March 19th, emailed and called us a day before the tour March 21st (tour date March 22nd) to say our hotel was too far. They gave us two options: pay an additional $50 or go to the meeting point ourselves. We agreed to pay the $50, but then they changed the pickup time from 5:00 AM to 4:00 AM. Shortly after, they called again and moved it to 3:00 AM, claiming there was a special event and road closures. We requested a cancellation and a full refund, but they refused because it was within 24 hours of the tour. Even after that, they kept sending emails changing the pickup time back to 4:00 AM. I replied to reiterate our request for a cancellation and we did not go. This was a terrible experience. We strongly advise against taking this tour. Unless you specifically want to experience passing through the locks on a ship, it is better to go there on your own to watch the ships pass.

3.0 Partial Transit- start was stressful

Amber_M, March 2026

Pick up from hotel was on time. Our driver took us to the actual boat instead of where we were to go for check in. We had to wait 45 minutes standing at the dock waiting for everyone else to arrive. The lunch provided was average. There was plenty of soda and water provided. Beer & chips could be purchased. GUS did a good job narrating in both Spanish & English. Glad we did the partial transit tour- which was interesting/ but it does make for a long day. My 15 year old was bored at points through out.

5.0 Truly unbelievable experience

Carmen_D, March 2026

The Viator Half Transit Tour lasts from 10:00 AM (dock embarkation) to 17:00 hrs (dock disembarkation) exactly as advertised. It takes you through the passage by boat through 3 locks which is plenty for you to see the lock mechanism . It is an extremely/ extraordinary tour I highly recommend. The day went by so fast! There was plenty on board to drink (water and soft drinks) they also serve a typical Panamaen lunch. If you are looking for a greater activity take this one , you won’t be disappointed.

3.0 Overall Impression...

Lee_B, February 2026

Overall Impression This Panama Canal partial transit tour offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness one of the world’s great engineering achievements — especially the lock system — and includes insightful historical narration from knowledgeable guides. However, organizational and logistical challenges markedly detract from an otherwise unique experience. 📍 1. Check-In and Initial Logistics — Chaotic Start The check-in process was disorganized and frustrating. Instructions about where and how to board were unclear, resulting in confusion among participants. What should have been a smooth start instead felt rushed and poorly coordinated. Remarkably, the wait and lack of clarity at the boarding point set the tone for an inefficient beginning to the day. 🍽 2. Breakfast — Underwhelming and Sparse Breakfast was offered but was limited in both quality and quantity. There was little variety, and the selections were underwhelming, leaving much to be desired for early-morning travelers who started their day before daybreak. 🚢 3. Tour Length and Canal Locks — Lengthy But Worth It The tour duration is long, spanning several hours from pickup to drop-off, which can be tiring for guests wanting a more efficient excursion. That said, the core experience — cruising through the Miraflores Locks and observing the lock operation from point-blank range — was genuinely fascinating. Seeing the vessel rise and fall with the canal’s water levels provided a rare and engaging perspective on this monumental structure. 🍔 4. Lunch — Disappointing With Limited Options Lunch onboard matched the breakfast in its limited appeal. Options were few, and the overall meal quality was mediocre. While edible, it failed to impress and did not reflect well on what was otherwise promoted as a full-service tour. 🛟 5. Disembarkation Challenges — Awkward Exit Once the water portion of the tour concluded, exiting the ship proved unexpectedly cumbersome due to issues with the brow (gangway). This added unnecessary stress and delay at a point in the itinerary when guests expected a smoother transition back onto land. 🚌 6. Return Transport — Unclear Logistics Although large buses were provided to transport everyone back to a meeting point, the reason why our original van could not return for us was unclear. It felt like an unnecessary step that complicated an otherwise straightforward return transfer — especially given the earlier chaos during pickup. 🗣 7. Tour Guide and Historical Commentary — Highlight of the Trip By far, the most positive aspect of the tour was the guide’s narrative. The explanations of the canal’s history, construction, and importance were engaging, informative, and well delivered, keeping interest high even during slower segments of the cruise. This historical context elevated the experience beyond a simple sightseeing trip. This Panama Canal partial transit cruise delivers undeniable value in terms of experience and historical insight, but the organizational inefficiencies, disappointing meals, and problematic transitions significantly undercut the overall satisfaction. It’s a worthwhile investment primarily for canal enthusiasts and first-time visitors — just go in with moderated expectations about logistics and food quality.

4.0 Cool experience but wouldn’t do it again

Sheri_J, February 2026

Such a cool experience but really early in the morning and too long. The food was not great for vegetarians.

4.0 Trip is well organized by...

Lucy_P, January 2026

Trip is well organized by the company. Staff was very kind. Boat had plenty of restrooms and lots of water/soda available. If you are not a morning person, go on the southbound trip. Pick up was at 5:15am and we were done by 12:30. The only negative was the food. Very small plates and looong lines to get a plate. Experience was good!

5.0 Great efficient canal tour

Larry_S, January 2026

Great view and experience in a canal lock. Worth getting up at 4:45, nice pick up and return service Gus gave constant bilingual commentary explaining canal history and operations

5.0 Once in a lifetime tour

Emily_Y, December 2025

Once in a lifetime opportunity to travel through the lock system. Tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and the entire staff was very professional.

5.0 Early pick up times.

Joseph_M, November 2025

Great tour but did start our rough. Pick up time was 5 AM so we were not able to eat any breakfast before leaving. When we got to the dock the boat did not have our name on the list so we were pushed off to the side and then after everyone boarded our driver talked to the guy and after about 10 minutes and phone call we were allowed on the boat. Good think it wasn't very crowded so we were able to get good seats. The boat did serve something called breakfast but it some just cold cheese, ham, bananas, and grapes. They also served lunch but it was cold and again not very good. So bring your own snacks. The canal tour was amazing. We shared the locks with some tug boats so we have great views. Our tour guide Uncle Marty was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of good information.

5.0 Educational trip

Hege, November 2025

It is really an interesting tour. Being in the locks and experience it yourself is amazing 🙂 The guiding was very good, but I would advise you to stay outside, as it was hard to hear what the guide said inside.

5.0 Canal Cruise

alan_m_stainer, November 2025

Fantastic cruise along the canal going through 3 different canals. The guide was very knowledgable and willing to answer any questions. View were wonderful and the food was really enjoyable. Thank you.

4.0 Very nice tour, but too...

Andreea_T, October 2025

Very nice tour, but too long. Also, the logistics need to be improved. It took 2.5 hours from the hotel to the ship because of poor organization. The lunch on the ship was good and the crew was nice. The guide gave lots of good information about the history of the Panama Canal. Overall a good tour.

4.0 Recommended, butooo read the full review.

Omar_R, September 2025

Seeing the locks through the same channel is worth it. Sail alongside large ships. Live the experience of going up and down with the level of the some, amazing. The BAD: it is an extremely long tour and at tedious times. They passed us at 8:30 am and the boat left after 12. The food quite improveable, (especially for the cost of the tour), boat urges you to maintain good. Logistics could be better. Since there are more than 100 people on board, lunchtime is chaos. It ends around 6 pm. So be prepared to be very, very patient. In rainy seasons wear waterproof, because with umbrellas you cover the vision of others when taking photos.

5.0 Our guide Gus was super informative and very patient with repetitive questions

Pattie_H, September 2025

Informative, emersion into the experience of going through the locks. In addition, food was very good.

5.0 This is THE trip to take...

Rowland_R, June 2025

This is THE trip to take whilst in Panama. A partial transit takes in iconic locks and passage under the Americas bridge. The tour commentary was excellent. One minor observation..vegetarians were not really catered for with the "light lunch". That could easily be remedied. The complimentary coffee was excellent. All in all a worthwhile memorable trip.

5.0 Great trip, very well...

Peter_B, April 2025

Great trip, very well organized. Lunch was excellent and the guide knowledgeable, we did not realize that we would not be returning on the boat, but on a bus but everything was very well coordinated and worked out well 😁!

5.0 A Worthwhile Experience!

RUBY_J, March 2025

While the weather was rather hot, it was worth the heat. There was a little rain but nothing that hindered enjoyment of the trip. If you get a chance, definitely take the tour!

5.0 Gus was amazing!

Tara_N, March 2025

This tour was absolutely worth the money. Our tour guide, Gus, had so much interesting information for us as we navigated the locks. He also answered all of the questions asked of him during his explanations which was a bonus! The lunch was good as well. We made it through our portion of the canal in great time. The only issue we had (which was not really an issue but could have been) was the driver who transported us from our hotel to the tour was an hour early. We were walking back from breakfast and if it had taken longer we would’ve missed the ride. They only wait for 5 minutes then go on to the next stop.

4.0 Overall a pleasant experience.

Karen_B, February 2025

Early pick up was on time (good communication). Needed a little more instruction to board and off-board. The guide who gave the voice over on the cruise (Monty?) was great!!! Got a lot of information as we traveled. Good transportation, nice little lunch, free water/Cokes/Sprite, fairly nice bathroom on board. Overall a pleasant experience.

5.0 We had a great and...

anna_h, February 2025

We had a great and Informative boat tour through the canal. The only thing is we would have like a little more historical context about the canal while on the bus ride to the boat. The food was tasty and the staff was really friendly.

4.0 Panama Canal boat tour

marion81611, February 2025

Seeing how the locks work is fascinating. Despite some people complaining in past reviews of trouble taking photos due to number of people. I did not find that a problem and the lunch was definitely sufficient. What I did find a problem was all the waiting. Not just at the locks but on the bus. Picked up at 9:30 (last property pickup). Got to boat by 11;15, then sat on boat before it took off without any explanation for another 45 minutes. I met one lady who had been on the boat since 9:30 that am.

1.0 Good boat trip but the tour operator is deceitful

Joshua_F, February 2025

The boat tour itself was great. The problems started after we docked. The tour specifically says it includes entry to the Miraflores visitor center. The tour company admitted that the booking said it included the visitor center but they said it was a mistake. They refused to take us and refused to refund the cost on the entry ticket. Viator was equally as useless as they too admitted that it said it was included but they too refused to refund the cost. I have had good experiences with many other Viator tour excursions but they fumbled the ball on this one.

4.0 worthwhile historical trip

dottyo761, February 2025

It is a well worthwhile historical trip to visit the canal. The guide in the shuttle to the canal provided us with lots of good information. The guide on-board talked non-stop and the volume was too high. I'm glad I was there.

5.0 Great tour and great way to see the canal

Ben_S, January 2025

Starts very early but worth it. Great tour and a very unique perspective of the workings of the canal. Great guide and very informative and answered all questions we had.

4.0 Worth a visit

flavitafelix2016, January 2025

The tour is well organized. It starts at 7 a.m. and goes until noon. They offer a small breakfast and lunch, plus drinks such as water and coffee. The guide speaks Spanish and English.

4.0 Panama Canal partial transport

Debbie_M, January 2025

Slow/long wait to go thru the locks. Too many people on board. Hard to take pictures. Closest to site, last to be dropped off.

5.0 Awesome

bob_w, January 2025

We had a good time Super Mario was a great guide with lots of information and tips. We saw monkeys and slaoths and birds. The snack was tasted!

3.0 Great experience but gets boring after awhile

markmR4338NF, January 2025

There's a big difference between saying 'Very Good' and 'Average', the only options available here from 3 stars to 4. It's an experience that must be had, but sadly it can become very boring after the first lot of locks (Miraflores), especially when we were told we'd be disembarking around 11am but ended up being 3pm! So glad I didn't go for full transit!

5.0 Half-circuit Panama Canal Tour

fabioaU5154EO, December 2024

The Tour is great especially in my case as a civil engineer. well organized but is dispensable lunch included. There is a lot of people to be served and the tour ends at normal lunchtime. There is no need and it creates a lot of confusion on the boat. Finally, lunch was served before 11:00hrs in the morning.

5.0 Canal Cruise was top notch. Guide was excellent. Food was more than expected and tasted great. Great value.

Ronald_P, December 2024

Great tour knowledgeable guide. Awesome lunch. All around great value. Don't leave Panama without this cruise. Food and beverage was beyond expectations. Would highly recommend it

5.0 Recommend

Willis_W, December 2024

Tour starts with pickup at hotel and bus has a guide. You are taken to a tour boat which provides another guide. Overall a very enjoyable experience

5.0 Great day tour of the Panama Canal

Jack_B, December 2024

It's a great tour that takes you through the first three locks of the Panama Canal. The tour guide on the boat takes you through the history of the canal and the technology used in the locks to raise and lower vessels as they cross from one ocean to the other.

5.0 Panama Canal Partial Transit

YOMARIS_R, December 2024

It's an excellent experience. Katiushka is the best tour guide: patient, humble and had a good attention to us. 💯 Recommended.

5.0 Fantastic Experience!

Douglas_W, December 2024

What an experience!! It was a beautiful cruise thru the canal and experiencing the locks!! Ernesto and Jeronimo were very entertaining and informative!! Wonderful experience!

5.0 Panama Canal Experience

Shubhabrata_B, November 2024

Great tour of Panama Canal with all the details and history explained in English and Spanish. Covers important sights such as the Bridge of the Americas, Miraflores locks, and Gatun lake. Pick up and drop off from the hotel, beverages and food on board, and clear communication of timelines helped immensely.

2.0 Unprofessional

Quinn A, October 2024

The ship blasted very loud and obnoxious music for much of the voyage. Those loud sounds give me a headache. When the old tour guide occasionally spoke, it was about jokes, or he would just start singing 70's music for no reason. Very little historical information. "Uncle Marty" is a nice man but a horrible guide. He is a lounge entertainer. The organization was poor. No one told me when luch was served. By the time I got there, a lot of the food was gone. There are no tables for your lunch. Seems like for $150. I should be treated better. The Canal and locks were amazing, but the staff, much less so.

5.0 Great experience

Adee, October 2024

Worth it! What an experience! Everything was on time, smooth and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour!

5.0 Rising and falling with water PASS

Ramakrishna_B, October 2024

The rising of the boat as water guesses in. Then you go next level and it happens again till you are on the other side of Panama. 2019 experience

4.0 The Panama Canal Tour Through The Locks is Worth Your Time

Roxanne_F, September 2024

The trip was wonderful, even in the rain as we found chairs below deck where we could watch the shore & locks well, but stay out of the showers. The engineering of the Canal is a marvel, from the development of Gatun Lake from the flow of the 25 or so rivers, to the design of the locks and the waterways along the routes. It was designed over 100 years ago. Truly amazing.

4.0 Great views and good food.

Joshem_G, September 2024

Tour was great. Great views and good food. The boat was very noisy the entire ride. Narration was primarily in Spanish. English narration was loud, distorted, and difficult to understand.

2.0 the lunch was very bad and insufficient

Jairo_R, September 2024

The boat used for the tour was very outdated in terms of comfort. The lunch served was very poor, as were the snacks available on board, such as coffee, which was not available. The speaker was loud and incomprehensible, and the chairs and trash cans, which were not fixed, posed a risk to people's safety when exposed to strong waves and winds. I will never take this boat again. The transfer service was excellent, fast and safe.

5.0 Great trip through the locks

Richard_W, September 2024

We had to get up very early for our 5am pickup but it was truly worth it. We took a boat from the docks into the canal locks at miliflores just behind a large cargo ship and watched as the locks were closed and the water lifted the boat. It was really cool and we actually went through 3 sets of locks. The morning snack was nice and lunch was a hardy hot meal.

4.0 The whole trip was...

Dwight_R, September 2024

The whole trip was excellent. Even with a little rain the crew ensured we saw everything and it was explained in english and spanish.

5.0 Cruising the Panama Canal is a must!

Charles_S, August 2024

Going through the Panama Canal was an experience we will remember forever. Seeing the locks up close was incredible. The only thing is that we have special dietary needs, so it would be helpful to get a discount if one is not eating. Overall, excellent!

4.0 Canal transit was amazing!!!!

Yvette_T, August 2024

The Panama canal tour itself was amazing! I'm giving it a 4 star only because the tour guide who picked us up and brought us to the ferry dock did not speak English. She spoke in Spanish the whole ride to the ferry dock and back and we didn't understand a single word.
