5.0 Exceeded our expectations

lauriesT7825YG, March 2026

The coordination between the islands, the boat operators and various accommodations was extraordinary. The food was delicious. Each person associated with the tour was a delight. The coral was gorgeous Be flexible , be kind and patient and you too will have a wonderful trip. Brush up on basic Spanish!

4.0 Beautiful islands, poor communication

Isabel_L, March 2026

The islands are super beautiful! Of course, you have to know that there is a very rustic life and that is part of the experience. Other islands are more beautiful than others (Isla Aroma we loved, Isla Diabolo for example was not quite as beautiful in our opinion). Communication is difficult, of course, as only Spanish is spoken. We also felt that the guides and drivers had no interest in communicating with us and did not try to talk clearly or slowly. Actually, here in Panama I get along quite well with my Spanish skills, but there I really struggled. Also we had the impression that the people there did not feel like visiting Touris at all (which is fully understandable and okay) but they already made that very noticeable, which is why we felt uncomfortable in some cases.

1.0 Not the best

kelleys467, February 2026

First driver refused to answer simple question in English or Spanish. "Is this the only stop where we can buy water" Storms made travel unsafe but we were transported anyway. Fresh fish was nice but a lot of processed American food. First "tour" was just a quick walkthrough of people selling their stuff Prices on islands for water and basics varied widely. No communication between organizer, vendors and guests. We only got back to Panama City due to the kindness of a boat captain and independent driver. Do not recommend

Response from Host, February 2026

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. San Blas is a remote indigenous territory managed entirely by the Guna community, and all transportation services—including drivers and boat captains—are provided by local partners. Their primary role is safe transport, and while many speak basic Spanish and some English, fluency cannot always be guaranteed. We understand how clearer communication would have improved your experience, and we are working continuously to better prepare guests with information in advance. Regarding the weather, safety is always our highest priority. Conditions in the Caribbean can change quickly, and navigation is permitted only when local authorities and captains consider it safe to operate. If conditions ever reach unsafe levels, the port is officially closed and tours are suspended. The fact that navigation was allowed indicates that local authorities deemed conditions acceptable at that time. Nonetheless, we understand that rough weather can affect comfort and overall enjoyment. San Blas is not a commercial tourist destination but an autonomous indigenous region. The islands are inhabited communities where local families sell food, crafts, and basic supplies directly. Prices and offerings are independently managed by each family, which reflects the authentic and decentralized nature of the region rather than a standardized commercial system. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the fresh fish, which is caught daily by the local fishermen. The meal options also include some familiar items to accommodate the wide range of international guests we receive. Finally, we are grateful that you returned safely. All transportation is coordinated with certified local captains and drivers who operate these routes daily and are highly experienced in navigating the region. We regret that the experience did not meet your expectations, and we truly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue improving communication and preparation for future guests.

5.0 Dream trip

shayb449, January 2026

The San Blas island-hopping trip was the highlight of my Panama trip—and honestly, the highlight of my year. Four days were spent on small, secluded islands, each with calm, highly swimmable beaches. Ina, and especially Aroma, had great snorkeling directly off shore (bring your own snorkel—it’s worth it), with plenty of fish and clear water. Aroma, in particular, has a fairly significant reef structure essentially right off the beach. If I had to choose a favorite island, it would be Aroma. In conversations with others on the excursion, there was a clear consensus that it was everyone’s favorite. When we arrived, a departing guest told us, “It’s very laid back here—you’ll love it,” and that turned out to be completely accurate. If you can only choose one island, choose Aroma. The accommodations are rustic but charming. Pelicano had an over-water bungalow, while Ina and Aroma were more traditional tiki-hut style—Aroma even had sand floors. Connectivity varied: Pelicano had Starlink while we were there; Ina showed 3G but I couldn’t connect to the internet (possibly an eSIM issue); and Aroma was able to connect via nearby cell towers. Overall, connectivity wasn’t an issue—this isn’t what the islands are meant for anyway, and I was for others to believe I was unreachable. We were initially concerned the food might be plain, but it exceeded our expectations. On New Year’s Eve, the locals prepared a special additional meal, which was a great touch. Meals and excursions were announced by a conch shell. There was not a very rigid schedule, and it was refreshing to fully relax and not think about time until hearing the conch blow. Breakfast typically took place around 6:30 a.m., though sleeping in was difficult regardless due to the nature of the accommodations. Morning light and the sounds of other guests would usually wake you, but it wasn’t a major issue and it was still easy to get a restful night’s sleep. Drinks were available on all islands—beer was about $2, and some islands offered cocktails for around $5. Snacks were also available on some islands. We somewhat expected a livelier social atmosphere. While there were occasional conversations with other guests and a larger gathering on New Year’s Eve, most people seemed to be there to relax and unwind rather than party or heavily socialize—which we enjoyed. The off-island excursions were nothing special, but they did help break up the day. Communication with the organizers was sometimes difficult in English. That said, it was generally easy enough to go with the flow or rely on Spanish-speaking guests when needed. My only real critique is the process of getting back to Panama City. It’s chaotic—once you get off the boats, there are close to 100 trucks, and you have to find a driver heading to your accommodation (or somewhere nearby). We weren’t entirely clear on how the process was supposed to work. A Spanish-speaking friend we met helped organize a ride for us; without that assistance, there may have been delays or confusion. Still, this minor friction doesn’t come close to outweighing the overall experience.

5.0 Everything was photogenic.

D2103NKdianas, November 2025

This was the highlight of our trip to Panama. I read another review that dissed Aroma Island, but it was my favorite. A thatch hut on the beach with sand floor. Minimalist Paradise. You keep the door shut with a couch shell. The folks that lived there were so kind and it had the best food of the three islands we stayed on. (Order the Traditional food). The other islands had rustic, rough cabins. It rained everyday we were there but usually at night. The thatched hut didn't leak, but the cabins did and the metal roofs were noisy. I loved it all, but think of it like camping and bring the minimum things you need. We brought water, swimsuits, towels, toiletries, phone power bank, waterproof phone case, flash light, water shoes, and waterproof bag. Conserve fresh water and don't bring or leave trash. Don't put toilet paper in the toilet, put it in the basket next to the toilet. The toilets and showers are functional. There weren't any bugs. We visited different islands everyday, snorkeled, swam, and flopped on pristine beaches. The sand was powdery white, the sea was shades of blue and green. Everything was photogenic.

4.0 4 days 3 nights at San Blass

Jaypatrick1211, September 2025

We really enjoyed the overall trip. It is a beautifull part of the world. Transport to the location was nice. Communication was good from the organiser Sadly some small details let the experience down. For instance construction rubbish were present next to our accommodation The worst part we felt completely let down from day 4. We paid for 4 days ,re received a message saying that We could leave first thing in the morning or stay on the beach. Bearing in mind you pay a good price for 4 days there are no transport not even food on day four. We should have booked 3 days not 4 the fourth day was a joke as I said nobody cares for you . We got picked up and dropped us off.Driver again was very good Food was nice apart from breakfast which usually consisted of dry eggs .

Response from Host, September 2025

This tour, as mentioned in the description, is a 3-night / 4-day package. It includes one tour per day (three in total) and on the last day you have free time to enjoy the island at your own pace. Breakfast and lunch are also included. If you are interested in the 2-night / 3-day tour, that option includes 2 tours as described. Please review the full description for more details, and let us know if you have any additional questions. Many thanks!

5.0 A life journey that shouldn’t be overlooked

Steve K, April 2025

We went a 4 day 3 night excursion and it most definitely was an experience of a lifetime, my girlfriend was the one who wanted to go on this journey and I wasn’t too sure about it, but now all said and done I’m really glad to have experienced it and most definitely recommend it

5.0 Perfect tour

We did The 4 days tour and we totally recommend. The tour was perfectly organized, always available for Questions on whatsapp and super helpful along The way. Really worth organizing with them if you are planning to visit San Blas.

5.0 Best 4 days I’ve ever had

A6927SUkatieb, March 2024

I went March for 3 nights. If you are up for basics, on sandy desert islands, away from home comforts this is absolute heaven. Eg this is not a hotel. It is basic shelters on a beautiful desert island. There is a new road just complete (March 2024) from Panama City so it’s not bumpy like the last reviews say….but it is very windy. Have faith in the process. You will never know what is happening or where you will go - it will not be islands as listed on the itinerary but you won’t be disappointed… so…. relax, get to your most chilled place and know that someone will bring a boat round and shout your name at some point and all will be well. We went to 3 islands a day and slept on a different one each night. One had no power, one you poured water down the toilet to flush but that was more that I expected. Some had power and flushing toilets. Peaceful heaven… day trippers come onto the island for 2/3 hours then leave it just to your group. I would not recommend this for day trippers- it is too far a journey.. stay at least a night, 2 if you can and 3 was great. If you need detailed plans day to day this ain’t for you. If you can let go and go with the flow I have never been anywhere more beautiful. You are safe. Tou will be fed chiecken and rice/ fish and rice/ breakfast eggs…You will have food but bring own water and a few snacks from the gas stop on the way. Most places you can buy water and beer and Coca Cola. And even cocktails at some. At this time of year you only need swimsuit shorts and something to cover up from the sun. It is hot at night so do not need anything warm at this time of year. Some swimming shoes useful for snorkelling around sunken wrecks or one of the rocky islands. Because you are largely in the water and travelling by the local boats you will be wet all the time so just wear your swimsuit and a clever up. . You don’t need anything here. It will only be sandy and wet.. Leave your suitcases at your hotel. Most have free storage is you ask. You have to climb in and out of the boats often from the shore/ the water … if you ask loud enough before you set off they will put a ladder in boat which really helps but we didn’t get that til day 3. But we all helped eachother in and out. No mosquitoes on islands. Bring power bank cos you’ll want to take a lot of photos. You’ll see clear water and amazing underwater wildlife. If there was some information that would have made things better but we learnt there is none and you’ll only find out what is happening when something is happening but it works!!! Bring waterproof phone case and bring Colombian pesos you may want drinks, or to buy things from local tribes. Probably the best thing I have ever done.

5.0 4 Day 3 Night - SAN Blas Islands

282ashanb, August 2023

The car trip from Panama City to Carti Port was approx 3 1/2 hours. The beginning and end of the ride was smooth. The middle was very bumpy - TAKE Dramamine for motion sickness. The first night at Aroma Island was in no small words - shocking - for those used to AC and towels. Hut with Dirt floors but had a bed. My kids ended having fun with the experience but be ready. The second night at Aguca Island was really nice. Above ground lodging and just cool all around. The 3rd night at Perro Chico had electricity and fans which made sleeping so much better. At All the islands, you mostly have to take turns using the common shared but private showers. The food is the same throughout, chicken, fish and sometimes octopus or shrimp. Food is good. Bring snacks from the mainland to supplement. Bring $1s and $5s to buy water, soda and beers. The day trips to the natural pool, sunken ship, native islands and various coral reefs were amazing. They provide snorkeling gear. Pack light, bring soap and shampoo. Leave the sneakers at home or in the suitcase. Aqua socks, crocs or flip-flops all are better. Bring a water proof bag. Order a quick-dry micro fiber towel from Amazon and bring it with you. It will double as a beach towel, bath towel and blanket (this is my wife telling me to share this). Bottom line: if you are looking to do some different in a stunning scenic location - this is the place. Be prepared to go back in modern time to basic living conditions. The Kuna people are so nice but very reserved. The guides are outgoing and fun. My wife and 3 teenagers, niece and I will never forget their time here!

5.0 Paradise islands

tomasz301, August 2023

It was amazing 4 days. The islands are like from different world. Beautiful nature, warm people, good local food. The activities were amazing. You could try many varied things like paddling or snorkeling. We loved that part of our trip. They were also very well planned - they took part of the day, leaving the other part to rest. The logistics was also great. The boat pilots knew precisely who should go where and at what time.

5.0 Beautiful islands

Andreja P, August 2023

Beautiful islands:) we enjoyed it:) a lot of snorkling, sunken boat, tranquility in the evening…guna people are very nice.

5.0 Brilliant experience

elliemR7474PD, July 2023

The trip was amazing - saw some of the most amazing views I’ve ever seen. Was looked after every step of the way. Went snorkelling and paddle boarding. Would 100% recommend to anyone. Juan was a brilliant tour guide. If you’re looking for a real rural island experience this is the one for you!

3.0 HONEST REVIEW (read this before going)

Emma D, July 2023

Aroma island was horrific, everything else fantastic. If you can avoid staying on aroma island, do. I was expecting it to be basic, but this was another level (coming from a backpacker who stays in hostels a lot). The staff were unfriendly, the hut is sand floors and smelly bedding, the showers disgusting. The food was fine though. Aguja island was nice! Lovely staff and the room was fine, basic but it was clean. I would recommend staying for 1/2 nights, no longer. The snorkelling was really cool and it was so interesting to see how the Guna people live. If you do go, these are things you need: 1. WATER! No water is included, even with meals, you have to pay 2 dollars a bottle (in cash). 2. Waterproof bag 3. Hand sanitizer (there’s no soap anywhere) Basically, 2 nights is fine. 3 nights of not sleeping was too much for us, we actually finished the trip early. I wish I knew what I was getting into before I went. This is a back to basics trip. You will have no plugs to charge anything, you won’t be able to get clean at all, sand everywhere. It’s hard to stay hydrated because of the water situation. You can’t shower. AVOID AROMA ISLAND Aguja island is nice :)

Response from Host, July 2023

Thanks for your honest review. I think it is important people to know they are travelling to local community as you said, there is no fresh water to shower as we are used to, the water comes from rivers near by and it might still have some salt, the water is not hot, there are no mirrors, and potable water is only for sale, as there are no ducts in the islands. However, I do think it is an amazing experience to live like local people, to experience to be disconnected from your cellphone, and just enjoy the time with your self or your loved ones. If you like to swim, snorkell, no use to much make up, and be very natural, you will enjoy it so much to be in touch with the nature. Many thanks for your feedback, and we will provide your comments to Aroma, it was probably an issue with your cabana, but Aroma is has a amazing beach area, food is good, and staff is friendly. Thanks!!

4.0 Exotic!

Wolfyyy, May 2023

We spent 3 nights on the San Blas, the islands are beautiful, very small with a few rooms (very spartan), full of coconut (watch your head when walking), white sand and turquoise water. The Guna community takes care of meals and drinks (water, beers) are on sale for $2. Regarding the organization it was good but improveable, on the first day we did nothing of the program, it was caught up in the following days but the time is a bit long on an island, we were 8 tourists and we were going around a bit. On the other hand the activities of the other days were top. Personally we found that 3 nights was too much, we wanted to go home after the 2nd night but otherwise amazing experience, little taste of Koh Lanta!

5.0 An amazing experience that you can’t miss!

Voyager00643466379, May 2023

The islands were amazing and unlike anything we’ve ever experienced! The hosts were great and accommodating so you just have to let go and let them take care of things!

5.0 Amazing

jwill369, March 2023

Yann was an awesome tour guide! Sophie & Sandra were great sidekicks. Amazing experience that I will always remember. Delicious food, beautiful beaches, interesting culture of the Kuna, spectacular snorkling.. a must see when in Panama! Thank you guys!

3.0 Beautiful but not worth the day trip

Batgirl025, January 2023

Be prepared for a LONG day. If you’re going to do the island hopping in only one day, be prepared. The drive is treacherous and takes about 3 hours. About half of that is up in the mountains on a windy and extremely bumpy road (be prepared to be motion sick or get whiplash!). The boat ride is nice, you get to see a bunch of small islands out on the water. But honestly once you see one island, you’ve really seen them all. The tour leaves lots of “free” time - which is great as you can choose what you’d like to do. You spend about an hour or so on each island. The best part was the sand bar “island” right in the middle of the ocean. Other than that, with the water and sun and sand all day plus the 6+ hours in driving, I would not recommend or do this tour again.

5.0 Experience nature, natives and many new acquaintances!

voikaneumaier, January 2023

Really worthwhile: was super varied and adventurous. What you have to accept: You don't really get a schedule. And it is also unclear when it will continue. First, for example: Departure at half past ten, but then suddenly it starts at nine. And the first day we stood around at the port of departure for an hour. That's the only thing that's bothered me a little. A few tips: In the boat it gets basically wet. So always put on swimwear / swimsuit for the boat and pack clothes in plastic bags. The Jungle Tour involves wading in mud, i.e. water shoes (which you wear when swimming in the rocky beach). And urgently mosquito spray. Take it with you: small dollar bills, since apparently there is never any change. In the rooms where you are accommodated there is usually no own power supply. Itinerary of the trip: Day 1: One way ( 2 hours in the car you get shaken up) PelikanIsland- great island , nice to snorkel.Filming location of the overrated series “House of money” Natural bath on a sandbar with snorkeling and visiting an offshore paradise island Day 2: Guided tour of a local village - really fascinating. Tour of Jungle. Swimming at the waterfall. Overnight on Icodub Island. An island also great for snorkeling and bedrooms better than Pelican Island, but lame staff. Day 3: Tour to a nice chilly bathing island, later again a sandbar with snorkeling (nothing special) then to Perro Chico Dog Island. A great island where you snorkel around a sunken ship. There is an incredible variety of fish and corollas. Even (tame) sharks, although I haven't seen any. The kayak tour around the island in the blazing sun and heat we have given up, preferring to snorkel more often! On the island we stayed (super Service and even electricity in the room) and the next day we unfortunately went back.

5.0 4 days in paradise.

The trip with San Blas Adventures was definitely one of my life’s highlights. The crew was amazing and every day enthusiastic and good vibes, especially Yann the lead guide. Livvy and Aida did a great job in the kitchen and with the organization. We learned a lot about the Kuna culture and got many insights in their life. It was especially cool, that one of the guides, Hector, is a Kuna himself and could explain a lot about the culture and traditions. I’ll definitely do the trip again!

5.0 Christmas in San Blas- Amazing!!!

Liam S, December 2022

San Blas Adventures was amazing! Every part of the trip was exceptional. We did the Christmas trip from Panama to Colombia and Yann and the team provided such an enjoyable, helpful and pleasant experience for every member of the group. The guides, especially Yann, went above and beyond to ensure everyone was catered for and had an enjoyable trip, even up to ensuring safe transport from Colombia and organising flights for group members etc. 10/10 experience and would definitely recommend! Thankyou Yann, Pablo and Sylvain!

5.0 Increíble four days, excellent organisation and super fun

L3970FOkateb, December 2022

Absolutely fabulous tour. Will try and give as much detail as possible, both the good and bad, but to be clear from the start would absolutely rate this experience 5 stars. So, first things first - the journey. We were picked up from our hotel at 5:10am by a lovely guy called Chris, who spoke excellent English and provided us with really interesting information about the Guna culture throughout the journey. The journey to the San Blas itself is every bit as bad as people say, HOWEVER, following other people’s advice, we popped a Dramamine as soon as we woke up and followed that up with a plain light breakfast of bread rolls, and I can honestly say we didn’t feel sick at all, which was an absolute god send. Dramamine is nothing short of black magic so load up before you go (we took one everyday of the trip). In terms of packing, we kept it light, and we’re glad we did when we saw how much luggage other people had packed, though our biggest complaint with this tour is that we were not explicitly told to bring water with us. Other people on different tours had gotten the message and brought big bottles of water with them, but no one had told us it would be necessary. In all fairness, if you don’t bring any water you do get small bottles with lunch and dinner, and can buy extras for $2, but I would highly recommend bringing at least one big 4-5L bottle with you so you can have as much water as you need without paying extra. Once at the dock, we ended up waiting around for another 30-40 minutes before we were loaded onto a boat. Word of advice, always give your bag to the guides so they can put in under the tarpaulin to keep it dry, as it can get extremely wet on the boats. The way out to our first island actually wasn’t too wet after all, but I was glad go be wearing my swimming gear all the same. The first island (gorginega? Near pelican island) was the smallest island in which we stayed but it was super beautiful and the staff were lovely. In the evening we saw sting rays and sharks just offshore - really cool. This island also had the best toilet/shower facilities, i.e. soap available and clean. The second island we stayed on (aguja) was the biggest but also the most remote - in fact it was only us two there alongside one guide, but it was a really special experience and again the showers and toilets were good, though there was no soap available. The third and final island on which we stayed (perro chico) had the best sleeping arrangements (electricity and fans in the room!) but the worst toilets and showers by far - no soap and sadly they stunk of sewage and even the fresh water smelled pretty terrible. Ultimately, soap is obviously a luxury and given the remoteness of all the San Blas islands and the number of tourists, our complaints are fairly insignificant, but it was a shame because the first two islands we so good in this area. All the transport and activities throughout the four days ran seamlessly - we had about 7-8 different guides in total, but they always knew exactly where we were meant to be and what we were meant to be doing. It was perfect in that we were completely care free and not once did they slip up. Our itinerary was also practically identical to the one provided on here so that was nice. The one activity to be aware of is the waterfall hike - FYI if you have water shoes, wear them as you otherwise have to get your trainers completely sodden as you have to wade through the river twice. Also, it’s incredibly hot, sweaty and muddy, so if you’re not a fan of hiking you might not have a good time. The food was really great across the four days - we always went for the fish options and never regretted it. You also have the option of getting a whole lobster on the final night - if you like lobster 100% do this!! It was super delicious and super fun to eat. Finally, the journey home was much the same as the way out, although the sea was very choppy so we got quite wet and had to go a lot slower, and also through bad luck we had two kids throwing up in our car the whole drive back to Panama City but that is out of anyone’s control - just fyi it could happen to you too! Hopefully this review if helpful to anyone hoping to get a better understanding of what it is actually like :)

5.0 What an adventure!

Just returned from Panama, and, without doubt, our 3 night trip to the the Guna Yala Islands a highlight (as they are referred to by the local population) Booking was easy and we received regular contacts by email prior top our trip; we were picked up from our hotel by 'Christopher', who, not only had a fantastic knowledge of the Islands and its people, negotiated the rather bumpy road to the port without any issue and then ensured we met our guide for the next stage of the tour ('Kenneth') before leaving us at the busy and slightly chaotic boat jetty Yes we got soaked on the boat journey to the first island, yes we never quite knew what we would be doing next or which island we would be staying on the next night (our favourite was 'Pelican Island') but we simply put our trust in Kenneth and the others co-ordinating our trip who always seemed to be expecting us, whether it be to catch another boat or to stay over on another island- before we were eventually returned to our hotel 4 days later The islands are absolutely beautiful- the accommodation varied from bamboo huts, to wooden or brick 'chalets', was always simple but clean; the food, again, was simple but generally good We're a married couple in our late 50's/ early 60's and most others our young travellers in their 20's and 30's, but, if you have a spirit of adventure then couldn't recommend it highly enough!

4.0 Rustic Island Retreat

TravelerJody2014, June 2022

Beautiful islands and friendly people. Just need to be prepared for cold showers, limited food and drink options. If you want something other than, water, beer, or juice, you will need to bring it. Also bring a towel! The waterfall hike is a bit of a hike so you should be prepared for round trip 5 hours with mud and water. Very memorable trip and glad we roughed it for a few days to have this experience.

5.0 Let go and enjoy the ride!

jonb792, April 2022

Me and my buddy, Doug, did the Three night/Four Day San Blas Island Tour and not only was it the highlight of our trip, but it was the highlight of my year. There are some things you should know going into this tour. Firstly, it is barely a tour. It is more an experience. You don't have a "tour guide" -- rather you have people who live on the island who will pretty much decide what you're doing that day. It's a pretty wild thing to get used to and definitely took me a second to get into the groove of things. It all started when we were thrown into a small truck at 5 in the morning with two other people who were on a different tour (through the same company) and had a truly awful drive to get to San Blas. This is not to disparage the tour, this is just a fact. I never get carsick, and it wasn't the drivers fault in the least. The drive to get to San Blas is just awful. There is no way to sugarcoat it, and there's no way around it. It's bumpy and swervy and then both at the same time. I pride myself on never getting carsick and this drive pushed me to the limit. I never got to the point of blowing chunks, mind you, but a few times I got scared. The eyes were widening in a very particular way. And after that we took a twenty minute boat ride which can only be described as the most intense wet t-shirt competition. A wet t-shirt competition I didn't sign up for and won. My one note to you, sit up at the front of the boat and if you see them putting things in a blue tarp put everything you own in it, it will get wet otherwise. I stupidly held onto my fanny pack which resulted in me spending the first 10 minutes on the island splaying out all my money and passport in the hope of it drying. OH! that's another thing. Nothing ever dries. It's panama and you're on an island. Get ready for your clothes to always be damp. If it gets wet, that's the end of anything being dry, so pack accordingly. I don't want to ruin the tour for you, because half the joy is getting to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity for yourself. I imagine everyone has a slightly different take on this depending on where you're from and what you want out of an island excursion. But I will tell you this, if you don't speak Spanish get ready to feel like a real fish out of water. These people are not running a resort, they are not your friends or your attendants. You're on their island, and they barely want you there. ESPECIALLY if you don't speak Spanish. Go with a friend who knows the language, otherwise you will be left wondering why you never took that duolingo course. just trust me on this. I felt like the ugliest one at the school dance. There are so many things that are NOT explained on this tour, down to "where do I get a towel?" that had to be explained to me by a very kind Lithuanian who did speak perfect Spanish and seemed much more welcomed in. And I get it, I'm not saying that they should be more accommodating, in fact, once again, that's part of the allure of this tour -- total immersion in a culture that couldn't give two shnitz about you. They know they live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and they also know that they are Gods and I am just a puny human (this is not a joke, but a fact I learned). So, no, of course I don't expect them to be accommodating to me, a regular man who doesn't even know how to say "Excuse me, God of Island Ina, but where could a peon like me get a towel?" All this to say, know your Spanish, okay? Other than that, take the snorkel with you. You will go to a beautiful spot in the middle of the ocean, look over to the "guide" and say "Excuse me, do you have a snorkel?" And they will say no, and that is the end of it. So just take a snorkel from the island. And read everything very carefully before you go. Things are not explained, so it will just be a matter of what you know going in.

5.0 Best experience ever!

Jakob_B, January 2022

Me and my girlfriend had an amazing time at San Blas with Selim’s tour. When searching what to book, we were missing a detailed review so we decided to write one ourselves, for any future travellers to San Blas through Selim. HIGHLIGHTS After reading other reviews to go with the flow regarding the organisation, we were 100% mentally prepared for it, which is also why we had such a great time. Selim was not physically there with us, everything is done by locals on different islands and they run things in there own style. They seem all over the place, sometimes things may take a little bit more time or can happen out of nowhere, but the locals have their system and everything under control. Knowing exactly who you are and where you are supposed to be. So N1 rule for traveling San Blas is to just let it go and enjoy. You will not miss any boat or tour, you will not miss any islands. Just enjoy the experience and let the locals do their thing. Otherwise you will not have a good time. Selim was also checking in on us every night and if everything is ok which felt good. We were traveling as a couple and it always felt as a personal experience (we did not travel as group of 20), we just randomly shared the boat, tours or dinner with other travellers on their own tour. We also had a private cabana every night. We are city people that prefer higher end accommodations usually but came mentally prepared that this is camp style experience with shared bathrooms and sand everywhere. There is no signal except Digicel provider, and you can charge your phone (some islands free during dinner, other charge $2). Food is basic, but tastier than expected. We have had lobster, fish and chicken. Even pancakes for breakfast one day. Not sure how is with vegan or vegetarian options. We could also choose between chicken or fish on some occasions. We also brought our own snacks (bring some sweets because they are not included) and water, but you can also buy it on every island. (Water $2, Cola $2 Beer $2, Snacks $2-3). Road there takes place with SUVs because its so bumpy. You take a stop at a gas station (ATM was not working) so go to store one day before and dont rely on the last stop. Prices at gas station are high. Also you will need to pay $22 to enter Guna Yala territory. We took $100 with us but didn’t spend everything. Part of the tour is also the fact that you are spending time with the indigenous local community that still leaves in their own way. They take you on tours, on some islands we could walk pass their homes, and were always very welcomed. If you know a bit of Spanish or your guide speaks English talk to them. For 4 days we packed our backpacks and an additional waterproof bag (take it because things can get wet on the boat). We were able to leave our big suitcase in a hotel. We recommend doing the same but some people had much more luggage. We speak a bit of Spannish so it was much much easier and more entartaining. I know you cannot learn overnight but honestly if we wouldnt know Spanish it would probably be a bit more complicating. TOURS DAY 1 You will start early, SUVs will pick you up at your hotel and they are on time. Road will take about 3 hours. There were 6 of us in the car but were not on the same tour. When you arrive they will drop you off at the bay where all of the boats start so therefore there will be dozens of SUVs and hundreds of people coming and going. You will be called by a local to board and they will take care of your luggage. Ride will take about an hour and it can get bumpy and wet. We have had lunch and dinner on the first island + had a tour ( we just fell asleep on the beach when we heard someone screaming our name its time to go for a tour. They dont tell you when tours happen but they will make sure you go, and find you on the island) of the natural pool which is honestly nothing special to us. They told us there used to be a lot of seastars there but apperently sunscreen destroyed all of them. We also made a ‘stop’ for some locals to leave the boat on Pelican Island (where they shot Money Heist) so we could also take pictures. We used the other time to walk the island, chill, swim and read a book. We had a lobster on the first night but were the only one on the island having it, so we had a really premium experience. Our first island’s name was Narasgundub, but the tours probably change all the time. DAY 2 We left for the jungle hike in the morning after breakfast which was AMAZING. Your sail up the river stream which feels like Indiana Jones and then hike for an hour. Our guide was younger, spoke a bit English and genuinly cared for us. The tour is through a real jungle, it gets wet a muddy but just take it as an adventure. There were no insects but I guess it was the time of the year, I wouldnt plan for that. After we arrived back we had lunch, chilled for a bit and then left for second island - Aroma where we had dinner. Estetics wise this was my girlfrienda favorite island. Tons of nice palms, and beautiful water. This time the caban had mosquito net. DAY 3 We left after breakfast and first made a stop at an Island which name dont know but it was by far the nicest beach-wise. Itwas out of this world. They built us a beach tent, gave us pineapples, for some reasons some other people in our boat received canoes, but honestly we didnt care. People were just making selfies on them, and if we wanted we could ask for one. After 2 hours of swimming we made another stop at a natural pool, which was swamped with boats and again nothing special to us. Afterwards we arrived on the third island Yansailadub, which by my oppinion had the nicest beach views with swings, free hammocks, free paddleboard, phone charges and far superier food. It however had the pooerst bathroom facilities. We had an amazing lunch and just chilled for the whole day reading books, and finnaly knocked some rum and coke after dinner. Day 4 We left after breakfast, and arrived back at our hotel at 11am. Hope this review will help someone to enjoy San Blas the way as we did and had such an amazing adventure and disconnect from the world as us.

1.0 Not as promised

Charlie_L, January 2022

Beautiful but way too little activities, no kayaking or island hike as promised. Partially refunded, but would have never paid this much if I knew it was for so little.

Response from Host, January 2022

Hi Charlie. As explained before, the hiking in the jungle tour is not safe if the river is too high, and safety is our No1 priority for our clients. After communicating the cancellation of hiking tour, we provide other tour options for you to replace, to go snorkeling, or visit another island, but you didn't wanted to take any of the other options. Finally, the kayaks are available in the last island and all our clients can use them for free, they are just in front of the beach just as described in our website, it is not a guided kayaking tour, but all clients are happy to explore around at their own pace. Partial refund was made for the activities cancelled, and we even give you a courtesy of lobster diner, so not sure what else could we do for you to rate us with One Star.. And our prices are in line to support local economy, most of what you paid stay in local hands. Thanks for travelling with us!

5.0 Fabulous Four Days

224springf, December 2021

We went as a group of four, but at the last minute two people were delayed a day. Salim was able to catch them up to us the following day. In fact, Salim checked in on us every day, making sure we were ok and letting us know what the plan was for the following day. He also did his best to throw in some extras for the couple that was delayed. We were really impressed with his level of care. The islands are amazing! Like some other reviews point out, you need to check any resort-like expectations at the door. Beds are not great and washrooms are shared. Also you should like or at least be able to eat fish, because that is served for lunch and dinner most days. We went on what they advertise as a "jungle hike" from Naranjo Chico (Ina Cabins). At first we were unsure where they were going to find a big enough patch of land to call it a hike, but it turns out this event takes place on the mainland. When we pulled into a narrow river opening straight out of the ocean it was like being on "jungle cruise" and so wonderfully unexpected. The hike itself was about an hour each way, with plenty of time to swim at the falls. There are portions of this hike that are VERY MUDDY so bring appropriate footwear. Our second night was on Isla Aguja. The island is essentially just the cabins, washrooms, and an eating area. There is an area to play volleyball if there is a group, but during our visit there were only 6 guests on the island. This is a good island for doing absolutely nothing (I was wishing for a book). There is some snorkelling too. Our final night was on Perro Chico. This island is closer to the port and has a sunken ship just off the beach, so it is VERY POPULAR with day-trippers. They also have camping here, which means there were some party groups (whom I found entertaining). Food options were more varied here as well. Snorkeling around the sunken ship is a must. The locals are a cash-only society, so make sure to have American dollars handy if you want to buy beer or do any tipping.

4.0 Fun if you can let go of control

Inga_K_K, December 2021

San Blas is very beautiful, and finally I had a lovely time. However you have to be prepared that things will just happen according to the understanding of local indigenous community, not as on train schedule in Switzerland. You don't know where you will be going and when, you are just told a short while before: now we go to a different island or now we do the tour (possibly not the same island as in tour description and not on the same day). In the final accounting, all islands very beautiful and all tours were fun. So if you can relax and just let things happen, you will have good time. But if you need to be in control of everything and be informed at all times, this may not be for you. The lodgings and food are rather basic (but I did get my lobster dinner). Think toilet on the other end of the island, or at least over the yard. The facilities were nevertheless impeccably clean. According to tour description, a drink should have been included with lunch and dinner, but the local providers did not think so – just as well that I had packed plenty of water from the mainland. The jungle exclusion follows the course of a stream, wading sometimes knee deep, so dress accordingly. I finally had to do it in my trekking shoes, it did them no favours. The river is rocky so barefoot wading is not an option, and the rocks are sometimes slippery – this may not be appropriate for small children or senior citizens.

5.0 Awesome trip

A must do, so glad I spent 3 nights it was just awesome, all the islands are so beautiful, the food, the lobsters and the coconut water are all so fresh. The whole experience was so amazing

1.0 Unfortunately not recommended

P490BOchristianl, August 2021

San Blas itself is very nice and the locals are relatively distant but quite nice and helpful. It becomes problematic with the course of the tour. Points of scope were not met (no hiking in the jungle, no special dinner on the last evening, no dancing with the locals) But the absolute deal breaker is the fact that you never know what will happen when and where. There is no communication. Even after three requests, for example, there was the info : on this island you stay now 2 nights and at 09.30 tomorrow morning we go on a tour. The next morning at 09.30 it turned out that the tour is probably only at 11. This we found out at the jetty after asking why no boat was coming. At 11 a boat arrived and we were looking forward to the tour. The driver told us that there is no tour but we would now change the island. We have constantly referred to our services which are deposited here at TripAdvisor. Nobody knew this suburb. The conditions of the dwellings and partially non-functioning toilets etc. I'll leave neutral on my score. You have to expect that when you do a tour like this. This is absolutely ok but as pure info for one or the other maybe helpful. Negative is the food. If you book the tour here with 3 nights, you always get the same. Chicken or chicken. By the standards in Panama, this tour is very expensive (and also much cheaper to buy suburban, as we unfortunately only learned from many travelers too late) and you could at least try a little harder to create variety. But even this point is not so critical. The lack of planning, communication and obvious lack of a general plan for travelers of this tour makes it the worst experience on our Panama tour. San Blas itself is paradise and would be a dream for tourists. But for that there would have to be good management for these tours. The locals have a kind of monopoly, so here we hope for a good learning curve. Find another provider and/or stay a maximum of one night. Probably the best tip you can give.

Response from Host, August 2021

Thanks for your review. We will work on this and! Normally we have the dinners and groups activities but due to Covid we have some restrictions. We still meet the tour purpose which is visit the max quantity of islands in 3 nights and spending 1 night in each of the islands with a tour everyday, the time of the tours is always in the morning or in the afternoon, depending on the quantity of people you can book for the morning or afternoon and this needs to be arranged when you arrive to the island with the local people. Not speaking the local language in this tour can be a restriction to be able to communicate with local people. The price you are paying cannot be compared with the price that other people have when visiting only 1 island and staying there...the expenses to move you from 1 island to other needs to be considered, also additional tours everyday, believe me the price you are paying is fare. We only work with local people, we are social responsable tour operator and most of the money stay in their hands. Thanks again, we will work to improve our communication in the islands!

Benjamin T, February 2020

It was a relaxing, adventurous and educational 4 days. Our guide Salim did a great job and always had everything under control. I have recovered superbly on the islands and can take wonderful moments with me.

5.0 Absolutely amazing !!

Saborze1, December 2019

Fantastic experience! San Blas islands are paradise on earth and San Blas Adventures helps you make the most of it. Sleeping in the hammocks, eating fresh seafood, getting to know the Kuna Yala people, great guides, fireplace on the beach, somebody playing a guitar... all of it makes a very memorable trip. I recommend it to everybody!

4.0 Beautiful but tired

anabO944LD, November 2019

On this tour it is possible to know beautiful places, but it is tired because we stayed little time in each place. The local guide is very kind and concerned with the tourists. They provided us with clean towels and new mask and snorkel. By the way, seeing the beauty of the sea is the highlight of the tour. The only downside is that our driver spoke in English all the time and not everyone in the car understood the tips and information. Take the tour with a spirit of adventure and not relaxation.
